How to store hemp seeds properly
We sometimes forget that hemp seeds are living organisms, although before germinating they are in a state of "rest" (comparable to that of an animal when it is hibernating), in this phase the seeds could also die. This is why you need to provide them with optimal storage conditions until you are ready to germinate and plant them.
Ideal storage conditions for hemp seeds
As you will have understood, therefore, all hemp seeds need three main conditions that must always be kept under control:
- Light (the seeds must be in the dark)
- Relations in temperature (no sudden changes)
- Humidity (a cool place and a constant rate)
If the seeds are exposed to light or rapid changes in temperature and humidity, these conditions will cause the seeds to use up their available nutrient reserves for the germination period. Moisture can also cause mould and fungus to appear. In order to store hemp seeds properly, therefore, you need to give them a cool, dark and dry place. If possible, also try to store hemp seeds in their original packaging.

Where to store hemp seeds
For short term storage a cupboard or drawer where the temperature and humidity are stable can be very good. Do not store them in an outdoor environment such as a shed or garage where the temperature and humidity are subject to greater variations. Ideally, you should have a small refrigerator dedicated only to storing them, because even opening the refrigerator door can cause sudden changes in temperature and light penetration.
Can hemp seeds be frozen?
Hemp seeds can of course be stored in the freezer. The lower the temperature, the slower the seeds will decay, but if you respect the storage conditions listed above, you won't need to freeze the seeds, which will still have a shelf life of about 5 years, during which time you will always have a high germination rate.
